XAVIER’s STORY

In December 1999, three-year-old Xavier Lunan tragically lost his life due to severe abuse in Newburgh, New York. Over a three-week period, he endured repeated beatings in his home, suffering at the hands of those who should have protected him. Despite clear signs of distress, no action was taken to save him, and a canceled doctor’s appointment the day before his death prevented any chance of intervention.

During the trial, those responsible for Xavier’s suffering attempted to shift blame onto each other. It was undisputed that he died from a brutal beating on December 21, 1999, following weeks of abuse. A jury ultimately found them guilty for their roles in his death. One was sentenced to 25 years to life for second-degree murder, while the other received a sentence of 2½ to seven years for reckless endangerment and criminally negligent homicide.

Decades later, Xavier’s memory continues to be honored in Newburgh. In June 2023, the city inaugurated Xavier Lunan Park, featuring new splash pads to provide children with a safe and enjoyable space. Xavier’s older brother, Andrew Krigsman, who was four at the time of the tragedy, has been instrumental in these commemorative efforts. He expressed that returning to Newburgh and contributing positively to the community helps transform a story of tragedy into one of triumph, addressing past trauma in a constructive manner.

Xavier Lunan’s story is a reminder of the importance of creating spaces where people feel safe, valued, and empowered.
